ARE VAPING FLAVOURS AT RISK?

Posted on 04 March 2022

Back in early 2021 the government of Canada proposed a number of changes to the federal vaping regulations. One of the proposed changes included a flavour ban, prohibiting commercial sale of e-liquid in any flavour other than tobacco, menthol, and mint in a misguided attempt to discourage youth vaping. The good news is that at the time of writing, the proposed flavour ban has NOT gone into effect. E-liquid remains available in a variety of flavor profiles including fruits and desserts.

This is of course great news, but with so much uncertainty around the future of vape regulations in Canada, now is the time for us to take a look at why access to flavoured e-liquid is vital for the health of vape users across the country.

Based on a report from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Policy Evaluation Project, a 2020 survey conducted in the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia found that if a flavour ban were to be imposed, one in five vape users would either turn to unregulated black market e-liquid to find their prefered flavour, or quit vaping and switch to combustible cigarettes, both of which pose a major public health concern. These findings were further supported by two studies from california, both of which reported an increase in cigarette use among youth and young adults after a flavour ban was put in place.

Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos recently published a first of it’s kind review on e-cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems. His publication titled A multi-dimensional review of the use of flavours in tobacco harm reduction & nicotine vaping products examines the science, consumer insights, risks and regulatory considerations pertaining to flavours used in tobacco harm reduction, specifically in nicotine vaping products. The review found that adults who vape non-tobacco flavours were twice as successful at quitting smoking compared to those who vape tobacco flavours, and three times as successful at staying off cigarettes compared to those who vape tobacco flavours. A summary of the review is available here.

It’s evident that access to flavoured e-liquid is essential for effective harm reduction. Thankfully the Canadian government has made no further proposals to limit access to vape flavours. As always we at NYX Ecigs strive to keep you as up to date as possible with all vape related news, and will continue to update as things change.
